Will's overnight at Georgetown

So how did this happen, you might ask?

Will was having a hard time breathing after choking on a liquid vitamin (polyvisol) Tuesday evening. It seemed to go down the wrong tube, and for some reason he wasn't recovering. He started having a croup like cough, his voice was suddenly hoarse, and we could tell that his airway was tightening, so Dave rushed him to the ER (faster for us than calling an ambulance since we live so close to the hospital).

By the time I arrived (about 15 minutes later), he had stabilized a good bit. They took some x-rays, and discovered that his epiglotis (sp?) gland and general airway was inflamed. Since this was a bit a-typical, and because his condition was so "acute" upon arrival, they decided to transfer him to Georgetown hospital where he could be closely monitored in their peds unit, and have their experienced radiologists assess the x-rays.

They brought him straight to his room, where several residents and nurses helped get him settled. They gave him a hefty steroid (3 day dose), which calmed his wheezing and croup like symptoms within an hour. By about 1pm he finally fell asleep. After waking up a few times throughout the night, he was up for good around 6:15am - super happy and ready to eat and play. It was a bit more challenging to keep an extremely tired 15 month old content in a hospital room, than the sleeping/eating/pooping 6 week old we were there with last year.
The doctors were somewhat baffled at what caused it. It could be that he had a croup virus that was exasperated by choking on the vitamins, and we would have ended up at the ER the next night - but it's odd that he wasn't at all sick before. Or it could be that the vitamins went down the wrong tube, and severely irritated the tissue, causing a spasm, and severe inflammation. Will, you're living up to the way you entered this world - keeping us on our toes, and a bit baffled by it it all ;). We're just so grateful that it didn't develop into something more major, and that

he's COMPLETELY fine now.
